Shop Walmart at Your Own Risk

People of Walmart is a site that celebrates the clientele of America’s largest retail chain. They feature photos of large and colorful and weird people, and everyone gets a good laugh. Until they spot their own mother on it — and then they go to the local Fox news channel and complain.

Melanie Wheeler, of Ypsilanti, Mich., told My Fox Detroit that her mom was unwittingly snapped and now she’s on the site with the caption “A member of the Canadian division of the trench coat mafia.”

“The thing is if you take a picture of someone in public, they’re in public,” she said. “My argument is you’re in a Walmart. We have no privacy shopping? … So, I could go into any store and take a picture of anybody or their children and put it up on a web page.”

Yep. That’s just the world we live in now. As the Fox legal analyst who weighed in said, it’s  totally legal and, in public, there is “no expectation of privacy.”

Why was Wheeler on the site in the first place? Possibly having a laugh for herself at the expense others?

Apparently it’s okay to take pictures of other people while they’re in public but not of Wheeler’s poor old mom.

The problem I see with this is that something mass-market and high-profilo like this is the sort of thing that can spur people to push for legal changes that will screw over street photographer that otherwise stay under the general public’s radar.

I was kind of disappointed I never showed up there–I had a guy point a cell at me and yell gotcha when I was in a Walmart with my motorcycle helmet still on. I guess the taking was more fun than the uploading 😦

When I initially commented I appear to have clicked the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and now each time a comment is added I receive
4 emails with the same comment. There has to be an easy method
you can remove me from that service? Cheers!
