White House Photog Gets Harassed – at White House
Published December 7, 2010 Harassment , Photography 2 CommentsTags: Mannie Garcia, Secret Service, White House
Now this one takes the cake. A credentialed — and major, we might add — photographer is harassed by Secret Service while taking photos outside the White House. Mannie Garcia, best known for his Obama photo that turned into the ubiquitous “Hope” poster and the lawsuit that followed, was taking photos of a World Aids Day rally on Pennsylvania Avenue, when an officer approached him and demanded he delete the photo.
“He just charged me,” Garcia told PDN Pulse. “He came right at me and grabbed my camera. He had his hand on his weapon and said give me that photo and I said no.”
Garcia walked away without further incident, and it was all quickly sorted out. The officer was apparently young and green, and Garcia said there has been a tense “mood in the air” lately.
Even so, maybe the Secret Service should reevaluate whether this officer is right for this post in front of one of the most photographed sites in the world.

LA County Sheriffs Harass Student Reporters
Published December 6, 2010 Los Angeles County Sheriffs 3 CommentsTags: LA County Board of Supervisor, student reporters, Zev Yaroslavsky
In November, three student reporters from the Art Institute of California went to the LA County Board of Supervisors to film a story on foster care fraud, and the moment they arrived at the building for a scheduled interview inside, security guards and the LA County Sheriffs pounced. The security guards asked for their IDs and told them it was illegal to film without a permit or press credentials. Then, after the reporters gave over their IDs and were walking away from the building, seven sheriffs approached and surrounded them, for no apparent reason.
Slow day at the county supervisor, I guess.
Two things though: One of the reporters, Cody Garcia, on the tape says not everyone can afford the huge expense of the permits required to film in LA. Wrong. Those permits are for commercial productions, not for news gathering, or any individual with a camera on public property for that matter. And Jesse Garcia says he understands why the police harass people because they are sussing out potential threats. Wrong again. We shouldn’t operate on the assumption that people with cameras pose a threat since all claims to that effect are unsubstantiated. (That is, unless the FBI gets involved.)
But you have to hand it to the guys, who didn’t take the harassment quietly — as you can hear the one reporter repeatedly protesting and calling out the armed officers’ intimidation tactics: “How can I provoke a confrontation when I’m walking away — from seven armed officers!”
Despite repeated attempts to get a comment from LA County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky about the matter, the reporters have yet to receive a response.

Greg Schmigel started shooting street photography with his iPhone 2G about four years ago. When he realized it took pretty decent photos, he decided he wanted to create a project that was simple, interesting and unique, and “Just What I See” was born. (He’s upgraded to the 3GS and 4 since then.) As he told the blog Uglybaby, “I really believe that about 80% of photography is about what the photographer sees. Your choice of camera makes up for the rest.” You can see more of his work here.
These days, some sort of creative endeavor with an Apple product equals instant buzz. Only Oprah has greater popular culture eminence! See Atomic Tom’s iPhone app jam session here or Jesse Rosten’s iPad-lit photo shoot here. (Atomic Tom’s video has over four million hits since mid-October. Four million!)
