Thank You For Your Call

In 1935, the Social Security Act was created to help ensure the economic safety of America’s elderly.

As of July 2010, the United States Social Security Administration does not recognize same-sex marriages or domestic partnerships as valid relationships.

Consequently, thousands of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender seniors are denied Social Security benefits every year.

Ineligible for Social Security surivors benefits, and faced with undue economic burdens, many LGBT seniors are often forced to give up their homes after losing their partner.

With the unfunded liabilities of Social Security and Medicare heading north of $60 trillion, I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Nobody younger than about 50 is going to see a dime from Social Security whether they’re straight or gay, married or not.

All Ponzi schemes eventually fail, and Social Security is the grand daddy of Ponzi schemes.

Well, until then everybody should be treated equally.

I agree that same-sex partnerships should be treated equally. But if I am not wrong, you mentioned on JPG, where I was directed from, that they didn’t have the “legal paperwork.” Well it’s kind of wrong to expect the federal government to take somebody’s word about the relationship if there’s nothing to actually prove it. So while I agree with the goal of your post, I disagree that this particular case is a good example for it.

      js-

Try reading the description again. “Legal paperwork” is referring to a marriage license, which Bill would of had if he was allowed to marry Harvey, qualifying him for Social Security survivors benefits. More important, if a marriage license existed in this case, then the federal government wouldn’t have to take Bill’s word about his 32 year old relationship to Harvey like you claim.

“So while I agree with the goal of your post, I disagree that this particular case is a good example for it.”

Completely disagree with you, but please explain why you think Bill’s story is not a good example to shed some light on this issue because there are thousands of other people who believe it is. Just do a Google search.
