What more is there to say? The oil spill is a disaster and BP are jerks.
Watch the above video as Drew Wheelan, conservationist coordinator for the American Birding Association, tries to film BP’s offices in Houma, Louisiana — from across the street.
Wheelan: “Am I violating any laws or anything like that?”
Officer: “Um…not particularly. BP doesn’t want people filming.”
Wheelan: “Well, I’m not on their property so BP doesn’t have anything to say about what I do right now.”
Officer: “Let me explain: BP doesn’t want any filming. So all I can really do is strongly suggest that you not film anything right now. If that makes any sense.”

I strongly suggest that the officer read the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which guarantees free speech and free press, followed by 42 U.S.C. 1983 which guarantees the right to sue anyone who interferes with those rights while acting under any color of authority.
Might help put things in perspective.
In all fairness though, at least the officer was being respectful and nice. He didn’t just tackle the guy, threaten his life, or grab him by the neck and repeatedly say “who are you?”
Have to agree with DT’s second comment, without contributing anything constructive myself, which I guess pretty much makes me an idiot. Hmm.
The phrase “strongly suggest” in itself strongly suggests that there will be some sort of consequences if he continues to film, However, maybe this nice officer knows that other officers in his department aren’t so nice, and is trying to save Mr. Wheelan some trouble that may occur if one of his fellow officers happens to drive by and see him filming.
It’s too bad this guy gave out his info so freely. It could have been a good payday for him!!
If Mr. Wheelan wouldn’t have been cooperative the situation would’ve probably gotten ugly fast.
I think he handled it well.
